Scherzer dominates, but does not record first win
April 30, 2009 by Dean
Arizona Diamondbacks young stud pitcher Max Scherzer took the mound in Milwaukee tonight looking for his first major league win. Scherzer did his job going six innings of shutout ball allowing only five hits and one walk while recording seven strikeouts. Scherzer lowered his season ERA to 3.48.
Arizona jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as second baseman Felipe Lopez lead off the game with his third home run of the season, his first since opening day. Lopez went 2-for-4 tonight scoring the only run of the night for the D-backs in their 4-1 loss. Justin Upton went 1-for-3 tonight and seems to have turned his season around since the 0-for-12 start. Since then Upton is 14-for-45 hitting .311 with two homers and four doubles.
Veteran Tom Gordon came in to start the seventh inning and looked like he was not ready for prime-time yet. Gordon only recorded one out and was unable to hold the lead for Scherzer. Gordon allowed two hits and two walks and left the game with the bases loaded and a 1-1 tie. Juan Guitierrez came in to relieve Gordon and inherited three base runners with only one out. Guitierrez also had the challenge of retiring the Brewers best hitter, Ryan Braun. That is exactly what he did striking him out. Guitierrez has only allowed one run in his last ten innings.
Scott Schoeneweis came in to face lefty Prince Fielder and walked the slugger giving the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Bob Melvin decided to leave Schoeneweis to face right handed Mike Cameron who was hitting under .150 against lefties this season. Cameron made the best of the situation and drove in two run on a double.
