Bullpen comes up big in win

July 22, 2009 by

teams_ariThe Arizona Diamondbacks were in trouble early and trailed the Colorado Rockies by a 4-1 score after four innings, but the D-backs bullpen were able to contribute 5 innings of one hit, 1 run ball. Starter Max Scherzer was only able to last four hits as he allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out six.

Clay Zavada worked the fifth and six innings and did not allow any hits in two innings.  Juan Guitierrez picked up the win with a hitless and scoreless seventh inning despite walking two batter.  Jon Rauch did allow one run in 2/3 of an inning and closer Chad Qualls came in for an inning and a third to pick up his 18th win.

Stephen Drew continued to sizzle in the lead-off role since taking over for Felipe Lopez and went 4-for-4 with a walk and ended the game with straight at bats in which he reached base.

Miguel Montero continues to make a case to be the every day catcher even after Chris Snyder returns going 2-for-4 with his eighth homer of the season and raising his batting average to .290.
