More D-Backs Winter Acquisitions

December 30, 2009 by

The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that they have secured agreements with both Bob Howry and infielder Kelly Johnson. The Diamondbacks, who were fairly quiet during the off-season a year ago, have secured two more great players for the 2010 regular season. Those of you may remember that team who had money issues a year ago dumped Randy Johnson and did not make too many moves to shore up their pitching staff. The Diamondbacks would have a disappointing 2009 as a result of multiple issues surfacing.

One of those issues, which seems to always be a challenge, is that of the pitching. After adding Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy in the three and four spots in the starting rotation, Arizona began what they call their bullpen stabilization program. One addition to the bullpen is Bob Howry, who played high school ball for Deer Valley in Glendale. Howry pitched 63.2 innings last year for the San Francisco Giants, striking out 46 batters.

On Wednesday, the Diamondbacks made it official that they had secured infielder and left-handed batter Kelly Johnson from the Atlanta Braves. Additionally the team has acquired Tony Abreu from the Los Angeles Dodgers for even more depth in the infield. With Ryan Roberts, Rusty Ryal and Augie Ojeda also able to play second it may make for a bit of a crowded infield but time will tell what happens next.

In all, it is comforting to see the organization making some moves to improve the play of the team, which is not something that we saw a year ago. As a side note, only three players have been invited to spring training that are not on the current roster. These players include pitchers Rodrigo Lopez and T.J. Beam as well as catcher Carlos Corporan and outfielder Drew Macias.
