Florida Stepping Up Attracting – Keeping Teams

January 1, 2010 by

As Spring Training is rapidly approaching the headlines in Florida are surrounding their move to keep teams in Florida. In the next five years there will be eight teams due to renegotiate leases. Florida recognizes the economic benefit that spring baseball brings to their state and is discussing legislation to improve the current condition of spring training at the Grapefruit League. Last year there was an even split in attendance for both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues with 1.5 million visitors to both states.

The move for new laws comes as a result of the migration of MLB teams to Arizona. Last year, the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Dodgers joined the Cactus League and the Cincinnati Reds will be joining the league this year. For the first time, Arizona will have as many teams playing spring ball as its east coast counterpart. Florida officials are worried that they will continue to lose more teams if they do not improve the conditions for the teams.

The latest story is that of the Chicago Cubs being asked to play in Florida. While they have explored many options, the team seems to be taking a long look at Naples for the future home of Cubs’ spring training. In December Mesa City Officials made some progress in their fight to keep the Cubs in Mesa. The Cubs’ management expects to make a decision in January. The reason why this is such a big issue for the Cactus League is that the Cubs bring the most fans to the Valley of the Sun. In 2009 over 203,000 baseball fans visited Mesa Hohokam Stadium
