Cubbies Safe at Home?

January 22, 2010 by

Okay so it is their second home but the Chicago Cubs announced late this week that they are leaps closer to staying at their spring training home of Mesa, Arizona. The announcement comes as quite a blow to the Grapefruit League as they continue to lose teams to the Valley of the Sun. The Cubs have been a regular fan favorite for visitors and locals alike.

The particulars of the deal began during the Arizona Fall League timeframe when the City of Mesa committed to state of the art practice equipment for the Chicago ball club. As talks continued through the winter and the Winter Meetings, Cubs’ ownership announced that they would be making a decision by January 2010. Earlier this month Mesa began making true on their promise on delivering the practice equipment for this year’s Cactus League.

The proposal was released on Thursday that outlined an $84 million facility. The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs will be staying in Arizona for Spring Training. Conversely, Arizona sources state that they deal has not gone through yet. The reason for this is that the city is expected to review the proposal on Monday. With all of the additional revenue and the fight that the city and fans have put up to keep the team in Mesa, the decision is looking like a slam dunk.
