In the top of the seventh the Padres would battle back to tie the game. The Angels would add two more runs in the eighth and San Diego would add another run to the scoreboard but it would not be enough to hang onto the lead as they are defeated by the Angels by a score of six to five.

Oakland would get off to a hot start by scoring two runs in the first and three more in the second inning of play. The Royals would close in on the A’s as they scored three runs in the fourth inning.

As the A’s seemed to solidify their lead with three more runs scored, Kansas City would have themselves a big sixth inning that was highlighted by a three run shot by Rick Ankiel. The A’s would be able to score a couple more runs for the remainder of the game but it was not enough to win the game. The Royals’ Mitch Maier would slam another home run in the eighth inning to close the gap. The final two runs would come in the bottom of the ninth as KC secures the victory.

On an unusually cold and rainy day in Arizona, the rain let up enough just in time for the spring action to begin. The Cubs would get off to a good start scoring three runs in the first three innings while leaving the Brewers with no runs scored through three. In the fourth inning, the Brewers would score two runs to tighten the gap.

In the sixth inning, the Brew Crew would score another run to tie the game at three while Milwaukee pitching took over. The Cubs were allowed no more runs for the remainder of the game when in the top of the ninth inning the lead would favor the Brewers. With one on and two out outfielder Jody Gerut would hit a home run to give the Brewers the lead as they win the game by a score of five to three.

Left fielder Conner Jackson, coming back from almost a whole season missed due to Valley Fever went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cincinnati Reds offense was lead by Jay Bruce who played DH today and got two of the Reds six hits and knocked in one.

D-backs starter Billy Buckner did not help himself much in his effort to land a starting rotation spot allowing two runs on two hits off two homers in his three innings of work. Roque Mercedes did look impressive in his one inning of work as he struck out the side in the 8th for the D-backs.

Strasburg last year with San Diego State was an impressive 13-1 with a 1.32 era in 109 innings. During that time he allowed only 19 walks and recorded a gaudy 195 strikeouts which made him the easy #1 draft pick for the Nationals last year. After being drafted Strasburg kept everyone on their toes as he waited til the 11th hour before signing a deal with the Nats.

Strasburg is expected to start in the minors this year for the Nationals but look for a quick call-up if he continues pitching like he did today. Strasburg didn’t come out fanning everyone against the Detroit Tigers but recorded an quick an uneventful 1-2-3 inning with three soft hit grounders to infielders. Strasburg would strike out the first batter he faced in the second inning the record another out on a grounder. Detroit was able to manage two singles off Strasburg before he retired the third out with another strike out to end the threat.

Second baseman Luis Valbuena scored two runs with his 3-for-3 day at the plate. Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez went 2-for-2 on the day with two batted in.

Indians starter Aaron Laffey allowed only one hit with no walks in his two innings of scoreless work. Justin Masterson, who came over from the Red Sox in the Victor Martinez trade allowed three hits and two runs while striking out three in his 1.1 innings.
