Cueto hit hard in last start as Reds fall to Rangers

The Cincinnati Reds young stud pitcher Johnny Cueto started the last game of the spring today against the Texas Rangers and was hit hard allowing five runs on ten hits in only four innings of work. Cueto did manage to strike out six preventing more damage while only walking one. The Rangers sent reliever Frank Francisco to the mound for one inning and he allowed two runs on four hits in the inning.

The Reds Scot Rolen hit his second homer of the spring in which he has struggled greatly. The Rangers were lead by center fielder Julio Borbon who was 3-for-3 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored including a game leadoff homer.

Showtime in Vegas Starring the Reds

The Reds and Dodgers would hit the road and head to Vegas to play at Cashman Field. The Reds would get a huge jump on the Dodgers as they were able to score four runs in the first and five more in the second. Los Angeles would score their first run in the third as they chipped away at the Cincinnati lead. The Reds, however, would score another run in the fourth inning to lead the Dodgers by nine.

In the following half of the inning, the Dodgers would score two more runs and, yet another, in the fifth inning. For the Reds, center fielder Chris Dickerson would have the only homer of the game as he hit a two-run shot in the second inning. The Reds would score two more runs in the eighth as they win the game by a score of twelve to four.

Leake picksup first win as Reds down A’s

Former ASU standout pitcher Mike Leake made a statement today allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work picking up his first win as the Cincinnati Reds downed the Oakland Athletics 8-3. Dallas Braden started for the A’s and allowed seven funs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings.

Travis Buck, Leake’s former teammate at ASU hit his fourth homer of the spring off his Sundevil friend and was 2-for-4 on the day. Scott Rolen knocked in three runs on the day for the Reds as did Drew Stubbs. Both stubs and Laynce Nix hit a homer for the Reds.

Padres Hang on to Beat the Reds

The San Diego Padres would drive in two runs in the first inning as they faced the Reds in Goodyear. The Reds would be able to score their first run of the game in the second inning. In the third inning, centerfielder Scott Hairston would hit a three-run homer to increase the Padres’ lead as the team looked to hold onto the lead.

In the fifth inning, infielder Oscar Salazar would hit a solo homer to put an additional run on the board. In the following inning, the Padres would drive in their final run of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Reds would drive in two and two more in eighth as pinch-hitter Chris Denove would hit a two-run home run. The Padres would win the game by a score of seven to five.

Cubs pitching holds Reds to one run

Chicago Cubs starter Randy Wells lasted 5.2 innings today in a 8-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Wells allowed only one run on seven hits a walk and struck out five. The good news for Reds starter Carlos Fisher was he struck out three batters in his 1.2 innings, but he did allow three runs on five hits.

Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez scored the only run of the day for the Reds in the fifth inning. Orlando Cabrera’s groundout scored Hernandez. Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin has been battling all spring to make the team’s opening day roster, and batting over .450 most of the spring he has deserved the shot. Today he found out he made the big club and went 1-for-4with two RBIs. Third baseman Chad Tracy had been hot early in the spring but has been cooled off considerably lately and is now hitting .243 after another 0-for day.

Dodgers Beat Reds in Close One

The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Cincinnati Reds in Goodyear in a close matchup. The Dodgers would score first in the second inning while the Reds would come back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams performed some solid pitching as the bats were kept pretty quiet for the majority of the game.

In the sixth inning, the Dodgers would score one more run to regain the lead. The Dodgers were able to hang onto the one run lead to win the game by a score of two to one. Clayton Kershaw on the mound for the Dodgers would get his second win of the spring as he would throw for six innings, striking out seven.

9th inning showdown leads to Padres downing of Reds

The Cincinnati Reds trailed the San Diego Padres by a score of 2-0 heading into the ninth inning when first baseman Joey Votto got his second hit of the day, this one a 2-run homer tying the game.

The Reds sent Donnie Joseph to the mound in the ninth inning and Joseph struggled recording only one out and allowing two hits and two walks which lead to a 3-2 win for the Padres. Luis Martinez pinched hit in the ninth and drove in the winning run. Former D-back Micah Owens continued to look strong this spring going three shut out innings allowing only one hit and one walk to go along with his three strikeouts for the Reds.

Griffey walk-off grand slam beats Reds

Ken Griffey Jr. came to the plate in the ninth inning facing the Cincinnati Reds, the team he played for in the stint between his stays with Seattle, and with one swing of the bat Junior made a 5-2 game a 6-5 win for the Mariners. The slam was the first homer of the spring for Junior.

The homer overshadowed a very good start by former ASU standout Mike Leake. Leake made his first start of the spring for the Reds and showed why he was worthy of the first round pick in the summer of 2009. Leake lasted four innings allowing only one run on three hits and one walk. Joey Votto got the start in the DH spot for the Reds and went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

Rockies use 7-run inning to down Reds

Cincinnati Reds starter Aaron Harang started strong throwing two shutout innings before being rocked for seven runs in the third inning. The opening day starter allowed a total of nine hits and walked two with one strikeout in 2.2 innings. Colorado Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez held the Reds hitless through three innings and scoreless through four and would up allowing five hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings.

The Reds would go yard twice in the fifth inning off Jimenez. Jonny Gomes hit his fifth home run of the spring to lead off the fifth inning and Laynce Nix added the second. For the Rockies short stop Troy Tulowitzki’s two-run homer got things going in the 7-run third.

Cincinnati Hammers Giants in the Eighth

The Reds faced the Giants on Wednesday at Goodyear Ballpark. Both teams would score a run a piece in the first inning in what looked to be a close game. The Reds would extend their lead in the third and fourth innings with a run a piece, extending their lead to two runs. In the seventh and eighth innings, the Giants would score a couple of runs to get them back in the action as they tied the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Reds would come out swinging as pinch-hitting outfielder Drew Stubbs would hit a two-run shot, hitting his fourth homer of the spring. The Reds would knock in a total of seven runs in the bottom of the eight, taking the lead and the game from the San Francisco Giants by a score of ten to three.
